An assistance dog is at work. Its place is beside its person.

The Association trains and certifies assistance dogs, keeps a public registry and issues a badge anyone can verify by code in 10 seconds.

What assistance dogs do

An assistance dog performs specific tasks for one person, the tasks it was trained for. That is what sets it apart from a pet.

  • Guide dog

For blind and visually impaired people

Avoids obstacles, stops at kerbs and steps, finds doors, crossings and free seats on transport.

  • Hearing dog

    For deaf and hard-of-hearing people

Alerts to the doorbell, an alarm clock, a crying baby or a fire alarm and leads to the sound.

  • Mobility assistance

For wheelchair users and people with limited mobility

Picks up and hands over objects, opens doors, presses buttons, helps keep balance.

  • Medical alert

    For diabetes and other conditions

Trained to respond to the change in scent when blood sugar drops and to alert early. Brings medicine or a phone.

  • Seizure response

    For people with seizures

Stays close during a seizure, raises the alarm, helps the person recover.

  • Psychiatric support

    For PTSD, anxiety disorders, autism

Interrupts panic attacks, calms with body pressure, keeps space in a crowd, leads out of stressful situations.

Who can join

The Association brings together people who work with assistance dogs, train them and welcome them.

Assistance dog handlers

A person with a disability or condition for whom the dog performs tasks. A medical confirmation of need and a trained dog are required.

Trainers and schools

Professionals who train dogs to the Association standard and run certification.

Puppy raisers

Volunteer families who raise and socialise future assistance dogs before specialised training.

Partners

Hotels, carriers, cafés, clinics and shops that welcome assistance dogs and teach staff to check the badge.

Requirements for the dog

  • ISO 11784/11785 microchip, 15 digits.
  • Pet passport and a valid rabies vaccination.
  • Veterinary check: the dog is healthy and fit to work.
  • Completed training for the tasks of one specific person.
  • Passed a public access test: transport, cafés, crowds. Ignores food, people and other dogs.
  • House-trained, walks on a loose lead beside the handler.

How a dog becomes an assistant

The path from puppy to badge. Every dog goes through each stage, and skills are confirmed at every renewal.

  1. Selection

    Temperament and health test.

  2. Socialisation

    City, transport, people, noise.

  3. Training

    Tasks for one specific person.

  4. Teamwork

    Dog and handler learn together.

  5. Certification

Public access test, registry entry, badge.

  6. Renewal

    Skills confirmed at each renewal.

Access and lodging

An assistance dog goes wherever its person can go. It does not get in the way of staff or other visitors: it was trained for that.

  • Planes and airports
  • Trains, metro, buses
  • Cafés and restaurants
  • Shops
  • Hotels and rentals
  • Clinics and pharmacies
  • Public offices

What the law says

In Russia, access for guide dogs to transport, social and public facilities is guaranteed by Article 15 of Federal Law No. 181-FZ on the social protection of disabled people. The training document follows the form set by Ministry of Labour Order No. 386n. Other assistance dogs have no separate rule yet. The Association works with partners and gives them a quick way to confirm the dog is trained.

How to check a dog at the door

  1. Scan the QR code on the badge or enter the number and code at assist-dog.com.
  2. Compare the photo and the name. If you have a scanner, compare the chip number.
  3. Make sure the status is “Active”.
  4. Do not ask about the diagnosis: it is private.

Rules for handlers

  • The dog wears a harness or vest with the Association patch.
  • On a lead, beside the handler, clean.
  • Calm, does not beg for food or bark without reason.
  • The handler is responsible for the dog’s behaviour.

Verify a badge

Enter the number from the badge. The next step asks for the code printed next to the QR.

Or point your camera at the QR code on the badge.
